This supports an early 1980/1990 study on the relationship between PAD and periodontal disease that concluded that men with periodontal disease had a significantly higher risk of PAD.

They're bad for your knees. Because they force your lower body to lean slowly forward, your knees are constantly subjected to unnatural strain, due to their perpetually bent position. This can lead to osteoarthritis, one of the most common forms of arthritis, which is twice as likely to occur with women compared to men. Many blame high heels, at least partly, for this statistical disparity.

They torture your feet. The pain they inflict on you after wearing them even for a few hours should be a pretty clear sign of the damage they're doing to your feet. High heels mess up the natural distribution of weight on the foot and foot bones; wearing a heel that is 3.25 inches high results in an increase in the pressure executed on the forefoot by more than 75%. The added strain can deform feet over time, resulting in conditions such as bunions and hammer toes.

They're bad for your foot's skin. The extra pressure exerted on the foot can lead to blisters and calloused soles; If the shoes you wear are tight, you may develop these in other parts of the foot as well.

They harm your toes. High-heeled shoes push toes together unnaturally, resulting in a foot that looks “squished.” Weaving shoes that are too tight too frequently can cause problems such as chronic foot pain, circulatory ailments, and even gangrene, which may result in amputation of toes, feet, or legs.

Podiatrist Discusses The Cause Of Heel Pain

Have you ever suffered a dull ache in the bottom of the heel or a sharp stabbing pain that radiates your your toes? Both are symptoms you may be suffering from acute or chronic heel pain. Heel pain is one of the main reasons people come to see me at my podiatry clinic.

Heel pain describes any pain localized to the underside of the heel but can also extend towards the back of the heel. There are numerous causes of heel pain and consequentially it is very important you are correctly diagnosed before a treatment plan is completed.

When a patient comes in complaining of heel pain I go through a detailed history of their issue. I want to know the type of pain (dull / sharp), when pain is worse, the level of activity and training and any previous injuries that may be related. Typically, heel pain is worse in the mornings or after prolonged periods of activity and may exacerbated by standing on hard floors or running.

The most common cause of heel pain is plantar fasciitis or plantar fasciosis. The plantar fascia is a thick, fibrous structure that originates under heel and attaches under the toes. You can feel the planter fascia when you flex your toes back and run your hand along the arch. Its main role is to provide support for the arch of the foot and it contracts the foot to provide tension for push off. While a severe blow or trauma to the area can result in a plantar fascia injury this is less common than the repetitive, overuse injury. Any activity or movement that increases the load on the plantar fascia or the amount of time the plantar fascia remains contracted will aggravate the condition. This is affected by foot posture, foot shape, shoe wear, occupation and physical activity. Tight calf muscles tend to overload the forefoot and this can also increase the tension on the plantar fascia – this is typical of women who regularly wear high heeled shoes. Micro-tears can occur within the fibers of the plantar fascia and this causes pain and inflammation usually around the heel area. Usually within the first month of symptoms it is treated as an acute injury but as symptoms prolong it is considered a chronic injury. The prognosis is generally better if treated earlier.

Unfortunately as we age the flexibility and durability of this structure begins to decrease. Weight gain or a sudden increase in exercise can trigger heel pain that previously would not have occurred in the past. Similar to many other foot and leg conditions, such as achilles tendinitis, these structures lose their elasticity and can no longer cope with the forces applied to them as we age. When beginning a running program, it is important to increase the duration and intensity of training much more gradually than before.

To minimize your risk, it is key to have a comprehensive gait assessment to determine if any biomechanical issues is contributing to your heel pain. See a qualified sports podiatrist to do this and if required recommend the right shoes or orthotics to correct any biomechanical issues. Regular stretching and strengthening exercise programs help increase your flexibility and joint stability and reduce the risk of overloading the plantar fascia. However, the key to treating heel pain quickly and successfully is seeking treatment as early as you can.

Solutions for an Ingrown Toenail

An ingrown toenail can be extremely painful and cause significant complications, especially if you have diabetes foot conditions that are a result of poor circulation and blood flow. Commonly affecting the big toe, severe cases of ingrown nails can cause a lot of pain and even problems with mobility.

Treatment Options for Ingrown Nails

Your podiatrist can help diagnose the ingrown toenail based on the symptoms reported and physical examination of the toe. Your doctor will examine the nail and the surrounding skin in order to determine an effective treatment.

Ingrown toenail treatment options may include:

· Lifting the nail . This process is conducted for a mild ingrown nail that is causing discomfort around the nail bed and surrounding fleshy tissue. Redness and pain may be experienced but no discharge. Your doctor may use cotton and a dental floss type string to slide under the edge of the nail in order to separate the nail from the skin that is overlying. The procedure helps the nail grow out and away from the skin.

· Partial removal of the nail . Partially removing the nail is reserved for extreme or slightly more extreme ingrown toenails where there is pain, redness and pus. Your doctor may cut and get rid of the ingrown part of the nail in order to relieve pressure and discomfort. Before the procedure is carried out, your doctor may numb the area temporarily to reduce any discomfort through the process. An anesthetic may be injected into the toe region.

· Removal of the entire nail and tissue . For recurrent ingrown toenails and the most extreme cases, your doctor may recommend the removal of the entire toenail or s significant portion of the nail along with the underlying tissue (known as the nail bed). This will prevent the portion of the nail that continues to become ingrown entirely and keep it from growing back. The procedure can be done using a chemical, laser or other methods.
