Tips for Achilles Tendonitis Treatment

It's hard to say really what is the worst form of musculo-skeletal dysfunction you can get, but for persistent, nagging pain and butter frustration, Achilles tendonitis is hard to beat. No matter what you do, how much treatment you have it just will not go away.

You're busting to get back into your exercise training program. You love running and playing sport, but every time you think you've got it beat, BAMMO, it comes back with a vengeance.

Then, just when you've got one Achilles fixed, the other one goes. There's another 12 months down the drain.

So what can you do?

Well the first thing is to take it easy, back off, give the Achilles a rest. And while you're doing that start tracking down the cause. According to Egoscue's principle, it is unquestionably to be at the site of the pain.

This means that all the rubbing, heating, icing and shocking at the spot where it hurts, whilst useful and palliative is illegally to get to the seat of the problem.

So where do you look? Answer, below the tendon and above it.

To fix the problem below the tendon you're probably going to need new running shoes. In fact, as you get older or start running longer distances you have to play close attention to the age of your shoes. Achilles tendonitis is a sign your shoes are worn out, or you've got the wrong type of shoe. The undoing of a lot of people was buying cross-trainers instead of running shoes. So buy a new pair of running shoes and buy a second pair a couple of months after the first pair and keep rotating them.

Get your shoes from a shop which specializes in running shoes, where there is someone competent to give you advice and sell you the right shoe for your feet and the distances you run.

Then it's off to the podiatrist to check your foot strike. If your feet are leaving in or out when you run you'll need wedges or orthotics. Do not argument!

Looking further up the leg there's a high likelihood that you have tight calves. And why do you have tight calves? Because you probably have tight hamstring and buttock muscles. There is also a high likelihood that the calf on the leg with Achilles tendonitis will be tighter than the other. The reason for this is that your body is twisted and the leg with the tendonitis is taking more than its share of the load.

The reason for the twist is probably because the thigh and buttock of the opposition leg are tight. There are specific exercises you can do to identify which muscles are tight and to loosen them up.

Why are the muscles on one side of your body tighter than those on the other? Habitual posture and the effect of hand and foot dominance over the years when hitting, throwing and kicking.

You need a set of exercises to loosen off calf, thigh and buttock muscles. Most therapists will only give you the calf stretches and on their own they do not do a lot to improve the condition; necessary but not sufficient.

Having said that there is a device you can use to loosen up your calves, 'The Stick'. It's the ultimate massage 'machine' for tight calves. You'll need to use it up to 10 times a day for a couple of minutes on each calf. You can use it to massage yourself but it's better if you can get someone else to do it on you. The secret to using 'The Stick' is not to stop using it when you think you're fixed.

And do not even think of stopping the calf, hamstring and buttock loosening exercises – ever.

One thing to remember is the synergistic effect of many things acting in concert that will, bit by bit contribute to fixing your Achilles tendonitis. Icing is important. Purchase a set of lunch-box ice packs and put them down the back of your socks or a pair of neoprene anklets 24/7. A magnet wrap may help, I'd suggest you try it.

Two final thoughts. Cross training on the stepper, the elliptical, the bike, the rower or the climber will help maintain your aerobic fitness without the jarring effect of running – and do not forget to strengthen as well as loosen your calf muscles.

Foot Facts – Tips for Healthy Feet

Your feet are your foundation. They function to support body weight during step and to propel the body forward during gait. There are 26 bones in each foot and 206 total bones in the human body. Thus, your feet account for 25% of the bones in your body! An average person takes between 5000 and 7000 steps per day and this increases for people who are more active.

You do not need to have foot pain to have a foot problem. Typically, unaddressed mechanical problems of the feet exist for a period of time before causing symptoms. Sometimes mechanical issues only become apprehensive after a change or increase in one's activity level or an increase in body weight (due to added stress and resulting pain). In addition, a mechanical or alignment problem at the feet can alter mechanisms and position of joints higher up in the kinetic chain including ankles, knees, hips, the back and even the neck! Thus, foot posture is related to one's whole body posture and a mechanical foot issue can cause or contribute to pain in other areas of the body. Uncorrected, postural imbalance and uneven joint wear can accelerate joint degeneration (arthritis).

1) Choose appropriate footwear:

The unfortunate trend is people choosing fashion over function, however, footwear with poor support and fit is frequently the cause or contributor of musculoskeletal foot disorders. Womens' high heeled shoes are the worst culprit forcing excess weight distribution at the ball of the foot and inward deviation of the toes. When choosing footwear …

a) choose flats or a slight heel over high heeled shoes

b) Ensure correct fit

The toe box should not put excess pressure on the sides, top or front of feet. A good tip when buying shoes is to take the ankle out and place your foot on it – your footprint should not go over the edges of the insole for correct fit. Another tip is to shop for shoes at the end of the day as your footprint will be slightly larger than the day's stresses.

c) for adequate motion control and support, shoes should pass 4 tests

– Dish Rag Test: if the shoe twists easily, it fails the test

– Pinch Test: if the heel counter is soft, it fails the test

– Fold Test: the shoe should bend easily where the toes naturally bend only

– Shelf Test: there should not be any drifting of the shelf relative to the heel when viewing shoes end on

2) Replace shoes every year:

Running shoes should be replaced at a minimum of annually but even sooner (every 3-6 months) for runners or the overweight as shoe structure breaks down faster.

3) Weight loss if overweight:

Being overweight will result in more load on all joints of the body but especially the feet because they support the whole body. As a result, obese people tend to have flattened arches more often than the general public. Muscles must also work harder to support excess weight. The added force of weight also exacerbates any mechanical or alignment problems.

4) Do exercises for feet and calves:

Appropriate stretching and strengthening of the lower extremity muscles can be very beneficial. Tight, short muscles should stretch and weaker, lengthened muscles should be strengthened. By doing so, muscles become more balanced which adds mechanical balance to related joints. A chiropractor can give you more specifics related to your particular case. For example, stretching the calves is particularly helpful for those with plantar fasciitis (a painful inflammation and scarring of the plantar fascia which results in heel and arch pain that is worst with the first morning steps). Rolling your foot forward and back over a tennis ball is also great, massaging and improving circulation. There are also specific exercises for those with flat feet which help to strengthen and support the longitudinal arch of the foot.

5) Have a gait scan:

Having a gait scan involves walking barefoot across a pressure sensitive mat. A computer records data and generates an image of where you put pressure on your feet when you walk. This is compared to the normal foot. A gait scan (along with a chiropractic analysis) helps to determine the need for orthotics. Data from the scan can be used to create custom-made orthotics which will reduce abnormal foot function while walking and realign your feet to a more normal position. As many as 60-70% of people have some sort of abnormal foot function and can benefit from a custom orthotics prescription.

6) Have a chiropractic analysis:

Chiropractors are skilled at assessing posture, alignment and function of the neuromusculoskeletal system. As mentioned earlier, foot position relates to whole body posture. Thus if you have a foot problem, a full spinal analysis is beneficial as well. Millions of people suffer from chronic sore, aching feet. Here I am referring not to serious food injuries or disorders, but rather, foot pain arising from common daily life activities. In fact, if you do suffer from chronically aching feet, chances are great that you fall into one of the following three categories:

1. Foot pain caused by physical activity.

People who engage in strenuous sports or physical fitness activities, such as running, walking, hiking, aerobics, tennis, golf, basketball, and other sports that put stress on the feet, are likely candidates to experience ongoing foot soreness at some point.

2. Foot soreness caused by uncomfortable shoes.

It is an unavoidable fact of our modern-day living that many professions and social norms require us to wear shoes designed for form rather than comfort or function. The main culprit here is high-heeled shoes and other women's dress shoes. Ouch!

3. Aching feet caused by excessive standing.

Many people have jobs, such as food service industry jobs, require standing for long periods of time or even even work days. Individuals engaging in such professions are highly likely to experience ongoing foot soreness.

In all of the above cases, while discontinuing the activities in question would certainly resolve our sore problem, this is hardly a viable option. We play sports because we love to do so. We wear high heels and dress shoes because we want to look our best. And we work standing-intensive jobs, well, because we have to earn a living!

The question, then, is how can we continue to engage in the activities that we love and need to do and rid ourselves of our chronic sore foot problem?

My Best Home Remedies for Sore Feet

Since it is our ongoing, daily activities that are the cause of our chronic sore pain, we require ongoing, daily therapy and maintenance to combat chronic foot soreness. Therefore, although I highly recommend receiving an occasional foot massage at a reflexology clinic if available, here I'd like to offer my two favorite low-cost, easy-to-perform home remedies for sore feet.

1. Epsom Salt Bath

Epsom salts, a compound of magnesium and sulfate, offer soothing, low-cost foot relief. Readily available at your local drugstore or grocery store, simply pour about a 1/4 to 1/2 cup of salts into a tub of warm water and soak your feet for up to a half hour. The Epsom salts work to reduce inflammation of sore nerves and muscles and leave your feet feeling refreshed.

Epsom salts are a great home remedy for aching feet. The only real drawbacks to this method are the ongoing cost of replenishing the salts and the time required to prepare and take the foot bath.

2. Home Reflexology

My personal favorite do-it-yourself sore foot pain remedy is home reflexology. There are a number of home reflexology tools on the market, spanning the entire range of cost and effectiveness.

My personal favorite home reflexology tool is a little-known Japanese foot massage tool called the takefumi.

Takefumi Japanese Foot Massager

The takefumi foot massager is the traditional Japanese foot massage tool that has been used as the go-to home remedy for sore feet in Japan for centuries.

The takefumi is actually simply a piece of bamboo, about a foot long. The naturally curved hardness of the bamboo is cut and shaped to provide a perfect foot massage with just the right amount of pressure: not to gentle but not too intense!

I love the takefumi because it is inexpensive and super easy to use. Just lay it on the floor and step on it gently. You'll find that the arched shape of the takefumi begins to work immediately to stretch and massage the feet in the opposite direction of the downward pressure of gravity to blissfully release all the soreness and tension stored up in the feet.

There is absolutely no doubt about it. Gout is one of the most painful illnesses you can have. This is an illness I suffer from time to time and when I have it I really am in agony. Gout is known as the “rich mans disease” but now in the modern era we know this is not so. Gout can be attributed to many things with the main culprits being shown at the bottom of this article. Below are a list of foods that you should avoid. This list of foods is not exhaustive and you should always be careful about what you purchase. You can not go around looking for foods that are low in purine (the chemical that leads to uric acid) that is impractical so you should use your own common sence here. Upon my research however these are the foods I recommend you avoid.

Alcohol – Goes without saying really !!! one of the worst culprits especially Beer and Lager, Bitter (for those in the UK) Red and White wine

Sardines – high in purine

Sauces – Gravies, rich and creamy sauces.

Offal / Organ products – Kidneys, Liver. Heart

Plantar Fasciitis Heel Pain Treatment

Heel pain is experienced when the foot of plantar fascia fibers became damaged, torn and inflamed, with the condition known as plantar fasciitis, taking its name from the tissue it affects – the plantar fascia. Pain in the heel is the most common complaint from this disorder, with a sharp stabbing pain experienced in the heel or sole of the foot, most frequently felt first thing in the morning when the first few steps are taken. The pain is associated with the inflammation of the plantar fascia ligament where it attaches to the heel bone. The pain usually subsides, but can persist as a dull ache.

The tissue can be likened to a rubber band, which flexes according to one's movement. It acts as part of the foot arch; the shock absorbing apparatus of the foot. Time and old age transform the rubber band into a rope to continue the analogy. People who have flat feet or high arches are the most common victims of this type of heel pain. Flat feet occur when the plantar fascia is long or over stretched while high arch feet are those where it is short or highly contracted. Both of these abnormalities benefit from arch supports and orthotic insoles to provide the extra support to aid foot function.

Obesity greatly increases the risk of suffering from heel pain. If you weigh too much, the burden of carrying the extra weight is taken by the plantar fascia. As such, it can easily become damaged, even during the most mundane of activities. Leading a sedentary lifestyle too increases the risk. Sudden exercise, even simply walking can cause damage when the feet are out of condition.

Treatment for heel pain can either be surgical or non-surgical. The non surgical methods include stretching exercises, as stretching helps to prevent painful episodes. If you are experiencing heel pain, avoid walking barefoot. If the heel pain is unbearable, put an ice pack on the area for about 15 minutes everyday. Doing this will effectively reduce the inflammation while acting as a natural anesthetic. There are also times when therapy or surgeries are the only remedies for heel pain.
