Fungi are plant-like organizations that have no chlorophyll. The food source of fungi is keratin that makes up our skin, hair and nails. A dark, warm moist area is their perfect breeding ground. This is the reason why nails are commonly infected with fungus.

Fungus is prevalent in areas such as swimming pools, shower rooms and in other areas that have warm and moist environment. You can easily pick them up by walking on moist floors barefooted. Toe nail fungal infection feels inevitable; however, there are some ways to avoid the infection. Here are some of them:
Wear clean synthetic socks – Socks made out of synthetics keep the moisture away from your feet. Change your socks whenever your feet sweat. Do not use dirty or used socks.
Wear comfortable shoes – Sometimes you should wear shoes that let your feet breathe. Leather shoes are great examples. Leather is soft and has an ability to absorb moisture. Moreover, removing your shoes periodically allow your feet to breathe and prevent them from sweating.
Wear flip-flops or aqua shoes whenever walking in public swimming pools or showers. Fungus often grows in these warm, humid places.
Use antifungal sprays or powders – If your feet sweat a lot, there is a high risk of getting infected by fungus. It is much better for you to use antifungal sprays or powders every time you wear shoes.
Good hygiene – It is very important to wash your feet thoroughly as often as possible. Just make sure to keep your feet dry on each wash. It is also advisable to keep your nails short and cut the nails across. This is because fungus often lives underneath nails especially toe nails.
Sterilize nail grooming kit – Always sterilize nail cutters, pushers and other instruments each use. If going to salon to have your nails done make sure that they sterilize their instruments or better yet bring your own.
Strengthen your immune system – Having a healthy immune system helps your body to fight toe nail fungal infection. Sometimes your immune system alone can keep fungus from infecting your nails. More often than not, there are cases where the nails fungus will go away on its own.
A toe nail fungal infection is very embarrassing and annoying. It is much better to do precautionary measures to prevent infection. Remember prevention is better than cure. Possible fungal infections can be avoided through these simple and easy steps. However, fungal infections can sometimes unavoidable due to some circumstances. If infection occurs, early treatment is deem necessary as to prevent the infection from getting worse.
