What Is Toe Nail Fungal Infection? Causes, Symptoms and Cure

According to statistics, onychomycosis or commonly known as toenail fungus affects approximately half of Americans, 70 years of age and above. The condition is caused by dermatophytes which is a common label to a group of fungus that causes skin disease. These fungus grow and they feed on the keratin which makes up the surface of the toe nail. The condition is relatively rare in young people especially children. However, the occurrence of this type of condition increases with age. The fungal infection occurs when microscopic fungi begins to enter a small trauma in the nail, then grow and spread in the warm and moist areas inside the person's socks or shoes.

What causes toenail fungal infection?

People can pick up toenail fungus in moist areas such as shower stalls, public gyms or swimming pools. This can be passed among family members and acquentions via direct or indirect contact.

This type of condition can be passed from one toe to another, or to other areas of the body. People who are active in sports and wear tight-fitting shoes or keep their feet from drying out are at higher risk of having this condition.

What are the symptoms?

The most common symptoms of toenail fungal infection are odorous debris under the toenail, hardening of the infected toenail, discoloration of the toenail, falling off of the toenail, and distinct spots along the sides of the affected toenails.

There is a big difference between the infection in fingernails and toenails because it is more difficult to treat infected toenails. The big and little toenails are more prone to this fungal infection even though the other toenails can also be infected.

In addition, other risk factors evident with this condition are: not drying off the feet althoughly, abnormal PH level of the skin, and a low immune system of someone who has been exposed to a fungus. People suffering from diabetes have a high risk of having a toenail fungus since their immune system is weak. Therefore, most diabetics would have to take advantage of the services of a podiatrist because they have sensitive toenails.

How to Treat Toenail Fungus?

Once the fungal infection begins, it is important to have it assessed by a specialist. The disease is curable. However, the treatment process is slow. There are two main types of fungal infection treatment. The first one is the topical cure that is usually applied to the surface of the nail. The second are medications taken through the person's mouth.

Research studies proved that topical remedy for nail fungus works best in the early periods of a mild infection. Furthermore, a health care professional may prescribe ciclopirox which is an anti-fungal nail polish that is applied on the infected nails and surrounding skin. You can also find other over-the-counter fungus treatments, despite their effectiveness varies.

Some people with toenail fungal infection prefer oral medications because they find them more effective, especially those categorized as advanced medications. In addition, home or 'natural' remedies are still used by some. These remedies vary from apple cider vinegar and tea tree oil to ointment and mouthwash. However, none of them has been verified scientifically.

Is it possible to prevent toenail fungus? Since treating a toenail infection can be very difficult, it is best to try to prevent the occurrence of the condition. Remember the importance of wearing protective shoes or sandals when using public showers, pool and gyms. By doing so, you are protecting your feet from contracting unseen microorganisms and fungi. Also, as much as possible do not borrow other people's socks or shoes especially if he has observable toenail fungus symptoms. Trim your toenails and wash your feet regularly. You should dry them thoroughly especially after taking a shower. If you suspect that you are already developing toenail fungus, you should see your foot doctor right away, so he can give you an appropriate treatment plan.

Inside The Common Ankle Sprain

Whether it is running and jumping on the basketball court or just a misstep on the stairs in front of your home, ankle sprains are some of the most commonly experienced injuries. Ankle sprains near approximately 85 percent of the ankle injuries doctors see each year.

There are different types, with different symptoms and degrees of severity.

Forms
Ankle sprains are categorized into three grades, based upon increased severity: I, II, and III. A Grade I means the ligaments are stretched. Grade II means the ligaments are partially torn, while Grade III is a full tear of the ligaments in the ankle. Each grade can be applied to the following different forms:

  • High ankle sprain. The ligaments of the tibia and fibula are injured at the ankle joint.
  • Medial ankle sprain. The inside ligaments are injured. Usually called the deltoid ligament.
  • Low ankle sprain. The ligaments that support the subtalar joint, below the true ankle joint.
  • Lateral ankle sprain. Occurs at the outside of the true ankle joint, and is the most common.

Symptoms
These four symptoms are common to all types of sprains.

  • Pain. The most obvious and immediate symptom of a sprain is pain. Sharp, well-localized pain will be felt in your ankle for almost any type of sprain, though it does become more severe than the higher degree of sprain. If the nerves in the ankle are stretched because of the sprain, burning and numbness may also be felt. As you begin to rest your ankle, the pain can become more generalized around your ankle.
  • Swelling. In almost all cases of sprained ankles, swelling occurs. As with pain, this will be greater with a more severe sprain. You can combat swelling by elevating your ankle the day or two following your injury. Swelling often becomes worse if you do not elevate an injured ankle.
  • Bruising. Another common symptom of a sprained ankle is bruising, which is simply a black and blue discoloration over your ankle. Bruising is caused by bleeding under the skin; it is not an indicator of the severity of your sprained ankle.
  • Joint Instability. With a high grade ankle sprain, you will most likely feel immediate instability in your ankle, whether it is looseness or trembling. Many people who experience a sprained ankle will hear a popping sound. If you hear this sound, it is essential to limit the movement of your ankle and elevate it.

An ankle sprain is a common injury for many people with active lifestyles. You should always take precautions if you begin experiencing any of the symptoms above, as immediate action will help fuel a quick recovery.

Advancements in Bunion Surgery Allow for Improved Outcomes

Bunions are joint protrusions of the foot, which usually develop at the base of the great toe, or the base of the fifth toe (Tailor's bunion). These pressure points are usually caused by bone malalignments, resulting in abnormal joint positioning. With malalignment of the joints, the great toe usually bends toward the second toe (hallux valgus), and the fifth toe can bend towards the fourth toe. Painful pressure points can be created where the enlarged joints contact the shoe, or where the contacts contact one another. Nerves can be pinched in these instances, resulting in severe foot pain, or sometimes numbness. Additionally, with poor joint alignment, the joint itself can become inflamed, and possibly lead to early arthritis, particularly at the great toe joint.

Bunions often run in families, as an inherited foot type that can predispose one to joint malalignment as a result of faulty biomechanics or foot structure. However, bunions can develop due to many factors, including trauma, arthritis, and neuromuscular disorders. Poor shoe choices have also been linked to early bunion formation, and can certainly result in increased symptoms once a bunion has formed. Bunions can develop at any age, and early treatment is advised to address the symptoms, and to help slow progress of the bunion.

Left untreated, bunion pain generally worsens over time and persistent arthritic changes can result. Additionally, other painful foot conditions can develop secondary to a bunion, due to the structural changes within the foot and altered gait. Hammertoes, corns, calluses, and ball of foot pain often following bunion formation. Bunion pain and these associated secondary conditions can cause people to reduce their activity levels, many times resulting in weight gain and decreased overall health. Therefore, the prompt treatment of bunion pain is essential.

Conservative treatments for bunions can often alleviate the symptoms, and allow for normal activities. These nonsurgical treatments include proper shoe choices, anti-inflammatory oral or injectable medications, icing, and periods of rest. Topical anti-inflammatories and off-loading padding can also be used. A bunion splint can straighten the great toe while it is being worn, but does not correct the bunion permanently. Orthotics are custom-made shoe inserts used to improve the biomechanics of the foot, and can reduce bunion pain and slow the progress of the deformity.

Surgical procedures are usually reserved for painful bunions, which limit normal activities, and do not respond to conservative treatments. However, surgery is also indicated in other instances, including bunions with the potential for wound or arthritis formation, and rapid-progressing deformities. Surgical intervention is generally aimed at reducing bunion pain, and restoring normal bone and joint alignment to minimize the chance of bunion recurrence.

Advances in bunion surgery have allowed for more predictable outcomes, less post-op pain, and a quicker return to normal activities. Improved surgical instrumentation, imaging modalities, and fixation hardware allow the foot surgeon to accurately correct the deformity, reducing the risk of post-op complications. Most bunion surgeries allow for limited walking on the day of surgery in a protective surgery shoe. Patients are generally returned to normal shoes in 4-6 weeks, with a regular return to full activities. Most patients experience excellent results with no return of the bunion deformity.

How to Prevent Foot Corns

Corns are calluses that form on the pressure points of the foot, usually the heel, between the toes or the pad of the foot. They are made up of thick, dead skin that are yellow or gray in color and can be extremely painful. They can become red and inflamed and if not treated properly or left for too long, can become infected and require surgery to remove.

In order to understand how to prevent foot corns, you must first understand what causes them. The primary cause is shoes that do not fit properly or that are too tight. Wearing high heels that do not support or cushion your foot is also a major factor. When your shoe constantly rubs against your toes it creates friction; your skin's defense mechanism kicks in and creates a hard thick layer of skin to ease this pressure.

Preventing foot corns is fairly simple. Make sure you purchase proper fitting shoes in your correct size. If you are not sure what your correct shoe size is, get a salesperson to measure your foot. Stay away from high boots that are narrow and scrunch up your toes. If you absolutely must have those heels because they are the latest fashion, try not to wear them for too long at any one time. A good companion for comfortable shoes is a separate cushioned insole. This will give your feet extra protection and make you feel like you are walking on air. Buying good quality shoes is not always cheap; be prepared to pay more for a shoe that gives you stability and comfort. Shop around and compare brands and prices. You can even do this online.

Another prevention method is to go barefoot as often as you can. This allows your feet to rest and breathe naturally. When you are at home, try to walk around the house barefoot. Obviously, it's easier to do this in the summer than in the winter.

If you have taken the advice above and you still find yourself with foot corns, there are many remedies you can try. Over the counter creams and medicated pads are quite effective; you can get them at any drug store. If you want a more natural remedy, try soaking your foot in chamomile tea or rubbing your corn with raw papaya juice several times daily. These are very effective natural methods that will ease the pain and make them disappear.

Permanent Correction of Ingrown Toenails

An ingrown toenail occurs when a portion of the nail plate embeds into the surrounding soft tissue of the toe. This usually occurs at the great toe for a variety of reasons, however, ingrown toenails can affect any of the digits of the feet. Once the nail embeds itself into soft tissue, the affected soft tissue becomes pinched resulting in significant pain. In most cases, the pain is worse with any contact to the area, such as bed sheets or closed shoes. However, other times an ingrown nail can result in constant pain.

Ingrown nails can be caused by a variety of factors, including inherited nail types, trauma, improper nail trimming, shoe or sock pressure, toe deformities, high heels, and exercise activities. Many times, ingrown nails are common in certain families as a result of an inherited nail shape, width, or thickness. Ingrown nails can occur at any age. Children often develop ingrown nails with their high activity levels, and lack of knowledge regarding proper nail trimming techniques. In adults, curved nails often progress with time, and can place one at increased risk for ingrown nails.

Once a nail has become ingrown, it produces an ideal environment for infection. The embedded nail provides an ideal colonization site for bacteria, hidden benefit the outer skin. When infection occurs with an ingrown nail, it is common to see significant redness, swelling, and drainage at the affected nail borders. The pain generally increases with an infection as well. Oral antibiotics can usually control the infection for a period of time. However, the infection commonly returns as soon as the antibiotic is stopped, except the portion of the nail that is embedded is removed.

Many times, ingrown nails can be invented, even in nails that are substantially curved. Proper nail trimming is essential. Generally, toenails should be trimmed straight across, never cutting deeply into the corners of the nail edges. If the nails edges are cut too short, many times the nail can not clear the skin of the nail fold as it grows, and buries itself into the soft tissue. A straight edge toenail clipper can aid in proper nail trimming. Additionally, a nail should not be left too long, as a shoe can create back pressure on the nail against the soft tissues causing it to embed and inflame. Shoes should allow a finger width distance between the end of the longest toe and the end of the shoe, to prevent pressure against the toes. Tight pointed shoes are also more likely to cause an ingrown nail, and should be avoided. Daily cleansing of the feet is also recommended to reduce sources of infection.

People often avoid provide professional treatment of ingrown nails for a variety of reasons, and live with the condition for many years unnecessarily. Some have had bad experiences in the doctor's office or emergency rooms previously, and are hesitant to seek treatment. Others are unaware that permanent correction is available with a simple office procedure. Many people attempted to painfully dig the nail edge out at home, which typically results in a return of pain upon nail regrowth, and places one at increased risk of infection and additional nail damage.

Fortunately, the treatment of ingrown nails has evolved over the years to a few simple office procedures that give predictable long-lasting results. In most instances, the non-painful base of the affected toe is pre-treated with cold spray to significantly reduce any brief injection pain. Once the toe is carefully anesthetized, the patient will not feel any pain during the procedure. The offending nail edge is then removed to the level of the nail root, which is then treated to prevent regrowth of the curved or embedded nail edge only. Antibiotic cream can then be applied to the area, followed by a light dressing. Post procedure home care generally requires simple daily cleansing, followed with antibiotic cream and a small bandage. Skin remodels at the nail edge over the next few weeks resulting in a normal appearing nail, which is inadvertently to become ingrown again.

Other permanent treatments for ingrown nails are available in the office setting as well, and all can prevent many years of unnecessary pain. Therefore, early treatment is advisable. The most common comment during the follow-up visit is “I can not believe I did not have this ingrown nail fixed sooner!”

Sever’s Disease (Calcaneal Apophysitis) – A Misnamed Disorder

Sever's disease is a disorder that commonly occurs in active children between the ages of nine and thirteen years of age. Even though it is misnamed as a disease, it is actually a self-limiting disorder that occurs around the growth plate in the back of the heel.

The Achilles tendon attaches to the upper portion of the heel growth plate. On the bottom of the growth plate is an attachment of a ligament known as the plantar fascia. With increased activity there is a pulling or tugging that occurs on this growth plate, and a portion of the growth plate is being pushed away from its attachment to the heel. X-rays are often taken to verify the position and the location of this growth plate.

In mild cases, elevating the heel through heel lifts in the shoes and decreasing activity level may be enough to control the pain. In more severe cases, orthotic therapy to help control the motion of the heel as well as icing, elevation, and aspirin therapy may be required to alleviate the symptoms. In those children who do not respond to either of the above-mentioned therapy, it is sometimes necessary to place the child in a below-knee cast for a period of four to six weeks. It is important for both the child and parents to understand that once the growth plate has fused to the primary bone in the heel, the pain and swelling associated with this disorder should resolve.

Please realize that the disorder may last from a couple of weeks to as long as one to two years. The treatment plan as prescribed by your doctor MUST be adhered to closely. The activity level of the child must be controlled during the early stages of treatment. All running and jumping sports such as basketball, trampoline, volleyball, tennis, soccer, etc. must be eliminated as part of the initial treatment. Once the child has improved and the pain has subsided, then a rigid stretching program must be implemented.

The purpose of the stretching program is to decrease the pull of the Achilles tendon on the growth plate. In the event that the stretching and the heel lift does not provide relief of the symptoms, the next course of therapy is to limit the amount of motion of the heel through an insert in the shoes, called orthotics. The orthotic accomplishes two basic functions: (1) To elevate the heel and decrease the pull of the Achilles tendon. (2) To prevent the rocking motion of the heel while the child is active. Typically, I have found that the majority of children will respond favorably to this type of conservative care and be able to actively return to their relevant sport with very little compromise. In those cases that do not respond well to the above conservative therapy, it is sometimes necessary to take the child out of the sport that is aggravating the condition, until such time that the growth plate fuses to the main bone of the heel.

Typical Treatments

Mild Cases
1. Discontinue all running, jumping, etc. activities.
2. Application of ice to the affected heel, 10 min. on 20 min. off, for 2-3 hours.
3. Aspirin as directed.
4. Heel lift.

Moderate Cases
1. Discontinue all strenuous activity.
2. Ice and elevation to the affected heel.
3. Anti-inflammatories.
4. Temporary orthotics with heel lift to be worn in all shoes.

Severe Cases
1. No weight bearing to the affected foot, crutch walking only,
2. Below knee casting for a period of 4-6 weeks.
3. Anti-inflammatories.
4. Treatment to follow based on symptoms after removing cast, ie, mild / moderate.

Timely presentation for an examination following the first symptoms of heel pain in children, usually allows for a quick resolution to this condition. Treatments are also tailor to help prevent recurrence of the condition, and to allow for the child to maintain an active lifestyle.

OPI Fungus Fix Reviews – Should You Believe Them?

Nail fungus is, unfortunately, an extremely common occurrence with thousands and thousands of people battling this reliably harmless but irritating condition on a regular basis. Finding a truly effective means of curing nail fungus can be quite the challenge especially when there are many varying degrees of infection ranging from the mild to the clearer. Although a few prescription drugs are available for treating fungus they come along with a host of serious side effects. As a result, over the counter (OTC) products for the treatment of nail fungus are plentiful with many different brands to choose from.

Although it is no longer being manufactured by its manufacturer, OPI Fungus Fix is one such OTC product that can still be found at some retailers now and during the coming months until their respective stocks are depleted. This topical treatment was marketed as an over the counter treatment for curing nail fungus in spite of it being more of a cosmetic product rather than an actual medical treatment, so it could actually be an effective means of putting an end to nail fungus once and for all, and if so, why is not it being made any more?

About OPI Fungus Fix

OPI Fungus Fix was made by the family owned OPI Company founded in the US by European immigrants in 1981 which has become a leader in the beauty industry as the creator of nail care products and its widely popular nail lacquers.

Fungus Fix must be used on a regular basis and the recommended application is twice per day although no side effects have been reported from using it more often than that. The ingredients of this gentle, salon style serum include undecylenoyl glycine and usinc acid.

The Pros and Cons of OPI Fungus Fix

The stellar reputation of OPI products is unrivaled thanks to its nearly 20 years as a manufacturer and seller of professional beauty products. Fragrance free and non-irritating, the liquid OPI Fungus Fix treatment was once widely available at pharmacies and nail salons through the US as well as through the popular online retailer Amazon.com. The average price was $ 14 for a one ounce bottle at the time of this writing making it an inexpensive treatment option.

OPI Fungus Fix also received several rave reviews from those who say they have used the product and experienced favorable results, although some have noted having difficulties contacting customer service with their concerns or questions. The manufacturer also reported dramatic improvements with usage in as little as two to three weeks for most cases, which is definitely consider less time than most OTC claim to need before a cure is achieved.

So should you waste time trying to find OPI Fungus Fix or would you better off using that time to find another product that will not only be available in the future but also be effective in curing even the most stubborn cases of nail fungus?

Fungus Fix by OPI was certainly a good product with several success stories scattered online, although we have not been able to verify some of the extra extraordinary claims that exist including the statement regarding its ability to cure nail fungus in as few as three weeks. A three week cure sounds rather incredible based on the medical facts regarding nail fungus and only those with a very mild to moderate case should expect some relief during such a short period of time as a complete and total cure simply is not possible in 21 days .

In conclusion, your best course of action would be to look into all possible treatment options which will help to save yourself some time, money, and a whole lot of effort while attempting to cure your nail fungus since since OPI Fungus Fix is no longer being made.

Before we go into details of how to deal with pain caused by bunions, it is important that you know what you are dealing with. This problem causes painful enlargement of the tissues that are at the base of the big toe. This enlargement of the toe causes discomfort when you walk or wear shoes. At times, if the problem is left untreated, it can cause dislocation of the bone that is at the base of the toe.

Most people prefer wearing designer shoes even if they are not comfortable wearing these shoes. When you wear narrow or high-heeled shoes, there is little space for the joints to move which increases the pressure and friction on these joints. When you wear ill-fitting shoes for a prolonged duration, the pressure on your big toe causes irritation which can stimulate the growth of involved tissues. If the irritation continues, the deformity increases and may even cause dislocation of the big toe from the analogous bone of your feet.

This problem can be reversed if right steps are taken. If you do not take care of your toes when the problem first appears, it can cause irreversible damage to your big toe. When the problem first appears, you must start wearing comfortable shoes and discard all your ill-fitting shoes. Wear shoes that do not obstruct the normal straight position of your toes. If possible, try to wear pads between your toes as it will in reducing irritation and swelling. Walking barefoot will also help as it will reduce the pressure on your joints and abate inflammation of your big toe. You can also use bunion splits and regulator to deal with this problem.

If these steps do not help, an orthopedic surgery may be required to deal with this problem. Surgery will help in realigning your joints and removing the protrusion in your big toe. Opt for surgery if there are no other alternatives available as they can make your tissues more sensitive and tender.

Foot Care Tips – 4 Best Ways To Keep Healthy Feet

Sad to say, but many are taking their feet for granted. You might think that it's just “feet” and that they do not need proper care and attention. But studies show that the health and appearance of our feet can greatly affect our overall health. Podiatrists agree that proper health care for your feet will make your activities easier to do. Even the slightest pain on your feet can make you feel uncomfortable all over.

Fortunately, our feet are one of the easiest parts of our body to keep in top shape. Just read and follow the tips below in keeping your feet healthy and looking great.

Hygiene

Because our feet can easily get fungal infection and bruises from everyday walking and other day to day activities, it is ideal to maintain a very good hygiene. Keep them healthy by scrubbing them thoroughly every time you bathe. Use soap and a good scrubbing material like a face towel or foot brush to remove dirt in the toe nails and in between toes. After bathing, completely dry your feet using a clean towel. Make sure that your feet are already dry before you put on any footwear. Putting on shoes or socks with wet feet is one of the main causes of fungal infection.

Make sure you do not borrow anyone's socks. It is very unhealthy to wear somebody else's socks because you may never know if they have sweaty feet or fungal infection. Same goes with slippers. If and when you really need to wear other people's shoes (bowling, etc.) just make sure you bring your own clean socks. If they are sandals or pumps for women, wear foots stockings all the time. There are also handy anti-fungal sprays available. Spray the inside of the shoes wait for about ten minutes or so before putting them on (always with socks).

Footwear

Choose proper and appropriate footwear for the occasion. Do not wear anything that is too small for you or too big. Both will create strain, not only to your feet but also to your legs. Likewise, if you are going for a walk or the activity involves a lot of walking, make sure you have comfortable sneakers or rubber shoes on. It is not healthy to wear shoes which are too flat always and also shoes with heels. It should be a balance of both types of shoes in a week.

Toe Cleaning or Pedicure

It is advisable to have a pedicure every once in a while. Just make sure that all the cleaning equipment of the salon you are going to cleans and sterilizes their equipment every after customer. If you are in doubt, you may also bring your own cleaning materials to be sure that you will not contract any unwanted disease.

Nail polish is unhealthy if used often. Nails should also have to have a breathing space. Putting on nail polish will turn your nails yellow because the nails will not be able to breathe. If you have an ugly nail, do not hide it with nail polish. Instead, have a podiatrist look at it and see how it will be corrected. Just keep it clean all the time.

Check your feet regularly

Check your feet on a regular basis for any bruises or open wounds. Treat the open wound immediately and use bandages every time you put on your shoes. Remove the bandage or gauze when you're at home. Also monitor the condition of your feet. There are certain times and weather when your feet becomes abnormally sweaty. During these occasions, you may want to use foot powder or foot antiperspirant sprays to avoid excess sweating.

Always remember that your feet of health means the health of your entire body. Keep it clean and dry always. Avoid wearing someone else's footwear and always check your feet for bruises and other unusual conditions. Consult your podiatrist when needed.
